Impedance cardiography (ICG) is a safe and accurate non-invasive tool to measure haemodynamic parameters 4 5 that can be performed in the outpatient setting. Selecting treatment strategies based on haemodynamic profiles for patients with hypertension may improve BP control. 2 3 These variations in haemodynamic profiles may have important implications for treatment selection because the choice for patients with a higher CO might be different than for those with a higher SVR. 1 Despite that hypertension is routinely diagnosed and managed based on degree of blood pressure (BP) elevation alone, patients with similar degree of BP elevation can have different underlying haemodynamic profiles. Hypertension is a haemodynamic-related disorder characterised by abnormalities of the cardiac output (CO), systemic vascular resistance (SVR) or a combination of both. 8 Department of Health Policy and Management, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA.7 Department of Cardiology, Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital, Beijing, China.
